Warrenton, VA

Colorful history, horse shows – including the “Hunter Show of America” – and a charming Main Street make Warrenton a good place to stop and shop – especially at Horse Country Saddlery for quality tack and leather goods, equestrian attire, hunt country clothing, unique décor and high fashion hats that attract visitors from around the world.

Established as a settlement before the Revolution began, Richard Henry Lee, father of the Declaration of Independence, donated 71 acres of land for the Fauquier County seat, which incorporated as the Town of Warrenton. It was the object of raids by Col. John Mosby – the “Gray Ghost” – until after the Civil War when he resided and practiced law there.

In old town Warrenton, attractions include the Old Jail Museum (c. 1808) and the cemetery with its memorial to 600 fallen Confederate soldiers and the final resting place of the “Gray Ghost.” The Warren Green Hotel was the site of General George McClellan’s farewell to his officers after being relieved of his command by President Lincoln. Plus, Wallis Simpson stayed there for six months before becoming the Duchess of Windsor.
