Virginia Wine Country

The heart of Virginia Wine Country is also the heart of Virginia’s Horse Country. Even though Virginia has been growing grapes for 400 years, thanks to Thomas Jefferson and others, it’s only in the last decade that the Piedmont region has quadrupled wine production and earned national and international recognition as the 5th largest wine producing state. Visitors may choose from 80 wineries – at last count! – working with 20 grape varietals.

From the Grey Horse Inn’s catbird seat near the boundary of Fauquier and Loudoun Counties, visitors will enjoy a dazzling array of choices because of the Inn’s proximity to nearly two dozen wineries. A partial list follows.

Nearby Middleburg is home to Swedenburg Estate Vineyard, Piedmont Vineyards, Chrysalis Vineyard. Leesburg offers Tarara Vineyards and Willowcroft Farm Vineyards, and Breaux Vineyards are headquartered to the west in Hillsboro. Markham boasts Naked Mountain Vineyard, where corks burned with the popular motto “Drink Naked” become treasured souvenirs or end up as creative crafts projects, like hot plates and cork boards for kitchen messages.

The Blue Ridge Wineway, an alliance of premier vineyards and wineries located along the Blue Ridge Mountains, provides visitors with a stellar roster: Blue Rock Vineyard near Little Washington, Farfelu near Flint Hill, Unicorn Winery and Gray Ghost Vineyard in proximity to Amissville, Pearmund Cellars just north of Warrenton, and Rappahannock Cellars near Huntly. Last but by no means least, Oasis Winery bring vintage glories to the natural beauty of Hume.
